Acne Treatment or a Skincare Plan: Where Should You Start?

If you’ve been looking in the mirror and wondering, Would my skin benefit from acne treatment? Or maybe I just need a better skincare routine?—you’re not alone.

It’s a set of questions we hear from new clients all the time. And honestly, figuring out which direction to take can save you a lot of time, money, and frustration.

Here’s how to tell where you might fall.

Signs You May Need a Skincare Plan

If your skin is mostly clear and your biggest concerns are things like uneven texture, dullness, pigmentation, fine lines, or the occasional breakout, you’re likely a great candidate for a customized skincare plan.

An occasional pimple doesn’t necessarily mean you have acne that needs to be treated with a full acne-specific program. Sometimes your skin simply needs the right combination of professional treatments and consistent homecare.

The same goes for the marks left behind from old breakouts. If the breakout itself is gone but you’re still seeing flat red or brown spots, we may need to focus more on the discoloration that acne left behind rather than the acne itself.

Treatments like chemical peels and microneedling can be great options for addressing these concerns, especially when paired with a home routine chosen specifically for your skin.

For clients in this category, regular customized facials and a realistic at-home routine can go a long way. Our Skin Essentials and Skin Simplified memberships were designed to make that consistency easier. Instead of waiting until something feels “wrong” with your skin, we can continue working toward your goals month after month.

Signs You May Need Acne Treatment

If you’re getting new breakouts every week, dealing with deep or painful blemishes, seeing clusters of breakouts on your face or body, or feeling like you’ve tried everything without getting your skin consistently clear, that’s when we start thinking beyond a traditional facial or skincare routine.

Acne usually needs consistency.

One of the biggest things we see with new acne clients is that they’ve been trying to piece together a routine on their own. Maybe one product works for a few weeks, another came highly recommended on TikTok, and there’s a third one they pull out whenever their skin gets really bad.

We get it. When your skin is breaking out, you’ll try just about anything that promises to help. And typically, you want that help to come fast.

The problem is that constantly switching products can make it difficult to know what your skin is actually responding to. A structured acne program gives us the opportunity to create a routine for your skin and then we can make intentional, educated adjustments after we spend time seeing how it responds.

This approach also applies if your breakouts are leaving behind discoloration. Our first priority is getting your active acne under control so we aren’t continually creating new marks while trying to fade the old ones.

What Acne Treatment Looks Like at The Esthetic Co

Our Acne Bootcamp is a four-to-six-month program designed for clients who are ready to take a consistent, guided approach to clearing their skin.

You’ll come into our Charlottesville studio for professional acne treatments every two to four weeks and follow an at-home regimen selected for your specific skin and acne concerns.

But this isn’t a “here are your products, see you in four months” kind of program.

Your esthetician will continue to evaluate your skin and adjust your routine as you progress. What your skin needs at the beginning of your acne journey may be very different from what it needs a few months later.

You’ll also have ongoing coaching between appointments. That means when you’re wondering if a new sunscreen is acne-safe, whether something in your haircare could be contributing to breakouts, or if you should add that product your friend swears by, you don’t have to guess.

You can ask us first.

Acne Bootcamp is $175 per month with a four-month minimum and begins with an in-depth skin assessment. Members also receive quarterly NeoClear laser treatments, a $300 value, as part of the program.

Still Not Sure Where You Fall? That’s Okay.

You don’t need to diagnose your own skin before coming to see us. That’s our job.

Every new client at The Esthetic Co starts with a virtual consultation. We’ll talk through your skin history, what you’ve already tried, what you’re currently using, what’s bothering you most, and what you ultimately want to change.

From there, we can recommend the path that actually makes sense for you, whether that’s Acne Bootcamp or a more traditional service and skincare plan.

And if you don’t need an intensive acne program? We’ll tell you that, too.

Your consultation fee is applied toward the treatment plan you choose, so you’re not paying an additional fee just to figure out where to begin.
